The Sri Lankan Navy said in a statement, "In a special operation conducted by the Navy in the South-Eastern Sea area of Delft Island of Jaffna on the night of 18 December 2021, six Indian fishing boats present in the Sri Lankan waters were seized. was taken, in which 43 Indian fishermen were on board.
The arrests were made by the Fast Attack Craft of the 04th Fast Attack Craft Flotilla (4 FAF) attached to the Northern Naval Command. He informed that the COVID-19 guidelines were followed during the campaign. The caught Indian fishermen were tested with rapid antigen, after which arrangements are being made to hand them over to the concerned authorities for legal action.
Significantly, fishermen from both countries are often arrested for inadvertently entering each other's waters. The fishermen issue has become a major irritant in bilateral relations.
