PM of Nepal Sher Bahadur Deuba has started giving special focus on BRI project
Nepal getting stuck in China's BRI project
Nepal signed China's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in May 2017. But till now not much work has been done on this project. In such a situation, the new PM of Nepal Sher Bahadur Deuba has started giving special focus on this project. China and Nepal are working on a framework agreement regarding this project.
The Kathmandu Post quoted government officials as saying that the two sides are expected to exchange draft implementation plans, negotiate projects and their execution under the BRI. Kali Prasad Pokharel, who was an officer in the Nepal Foreign Ministry, has told about the matter, 'China had demanded an implementation plan so that how the plans could be worked out under Nepal BRI. But till now we had not responded to China's request.
When Nepal signed the BRI agreement in 2017, it was seen as an important moment in Nepal-China relations. But due to the non-commissioning of a single project, many questions started arising. Experts believe that countries like India and America do not like to see powerful China in Nepal and due to this, the project has been delayed.
The only development from the Nepal side regarding BRI is that Kathmandu sent a list of 9 projects to China in January 2019 but there was no further progress on the talks.
